Iyengar Yoga Props

In Iyengar yoga, props are used depending on the situation and the maturity of the practitioner.

For students with illnesses or disabilities, the use of belts, bolsters, and blocks is a lifesaver, enabling students to do poses they would not be able to do otherwise. Using props can help students with heart disease, respiratory conditions, neck or back problems relieve pain and begin healing. As students improve and are able to do the poses on their own, props are no longer necessary.

Many asanas force us to face our fears. An inversion or backbend position may be frightening to a student. In this case, a prop can be used to confront, mitigate, and overcome the fear. For example, learning to do a backbend using a chair can help a beginning student overcome their fear of falling. Once that fear is alleviated, they can develop stability, proper alignment, and refined balance.

Props also help you to sustain the pose. As you hold the pose longer, you will feel more stable, calm, and focused both physically and mentally. While in the pose, your mind will turn inward, suppressing unnecessary thoughts and increasing objectivity and humility.

In this way, Iyengar yoga can use props to achieve precise alignment and relieve physical pain and discomfort, regardless of age or history of injury.

This time, students from the United States and Switzerland participated.

It is wonderful to see that people from overseas can easily take Iyengar yoga classes in Japan.

Instruction will be provided in English for overseas students.
